Walk It Like a Thesis

Presence, movement, and friendship between classes.

Adult academy students walking together near a courtyard fountain.

Between third and fourth period, the courtyard holds its daily seminar. No faculty attend and no credit is offered. The subject is the walk: books carried well, laughter managed, pace held steady through the fountain turn.

First-years walk fast, out of nerves. By spring they have learned what the upperclassmen already know — that arriving composed is worth more than arriving early, within limits the registrar has posted in writing.

Arriving composed is worth more than arriving early.

The friendships are the real curriculum. A good walking partner is harder to find than a good lab partner and, the deans admit privately, more predictive of graduation.
