A research lab on the social mechanics of popularity in networked publics. Students study reciprocity, peer validation, and the small loops of attention that decide who becomes visible and stays visible.

  1. Network structure 101 — nodes, edges, ties
  2. Reciprocity and the like-for-like loop
  3. Peer validation systems on and offline
  4. Visibility, gatekeeping, and parasocial trust
  5. Lab study — track a popularity loop in the wild
  6. Final lab report

Assessment

25% lab notebook, 25% network mapping exercise, 20% practical exam, 30% final report.
