Foundations of Electronic Music Culture
An introductory lecture and seminar on the social, sonic, and spatial structures of electronic music. Students develop a working vocabulary for genres, scenes, and the institutions that produce them.

Syllabus
- A short history of dance music institutions
- Genre family trees — house, techno, drum & bass, trance
- Venues, warehouses, and licensed events
- The DJ as scholar — selection, beatmatching, set design
- Scene economies and gatekeeping
- Final listening journal and seminar essay
Assessment
30% listening journal, 25% seminar participation, 20% mid-term essay, 25% final essay.
