A combined seminar and studio on how alternative scenes weld music, dress, and identity into a single language. Students study the canonical references and produce their own scene-specific material.

Syllabus

  1. Sound, image, and the scene as a whole
  2. Show flyers, zines, and scene press
  3. Garment vocabularies — patches, leather, plaid, mesh
  4. Identity, gatekeeping, and authenticity debates
  5. Studio brief — produce a scene artifact
  6. Final critique of the scene artifact

Assessment

25% studio briefs, 20% scene reading journal, 25% mid-term critique, 30% final critique and artifact.
